A complete separation system is not only about the equipment used for separation, but also includes the equipment used for transferring material into the separation machines. A suitable and stable transferring pump ensures the efficiency of the equipment it feeds for and even greatly affects the whole system’s running.

GN Solids Control is professional in providing separation solutions, and all necessary pumps, too.
Like for the shale shakers, if the material to be treated is from the pit or pond, GN has submersible slurry pump or vacuum pumps, for the desander or desilter, GN has full series of centrifugal pumps and etc:

1. Centrifugal pumps: centrifugal pumps are the most frequently used mud transfer pumps in a solids control system, it is used for desander and desilter feeding, jet mud mixing, and trip tank filling. GNSB series sand pumps are totally interchangeable with Mission pumps even for small parts, and the raw material used for GN centrifugal pumps are most suitable for drilling mud transferring.

2. Vacuum Pump: it is also called the sludge pump or solids transfer pump, cause it can handling a material with high solids content and large particle size. It is fully mechanical driven by compressed air, and movable. It is widely used in waste management, oily sludge separation and construction.

3. Submersible slurry pump: it is used for pumping sludge from mud pit to a desander unit or other equipment, it is also an economic solution as centrifuge feeding.

4. Screw pump: GN cooperate with international famous pump brands for centrifuge feeding. Normally, in VFD control panels for decanter centrifuge, the 3rd VFD is used for the screw pump speed adjusting, and also for fixed peed screw pumps, GN also provide customized solutions by adding mechanical adjusting device.

5. For deep drilling works and some big capacity solids control system, GN has shearing pump for cutting the material with high viscosity.

There are several different types of drilling muds used for different drilling conditions, mainly divided into 3 types, the water based mud, oil based mud and SBM. The mostly used ones are WBM and OBM.

For deep well drillings, the OBM is most common solution. Considering it’s components, the oil based mud is more expensive than water based mud, that’s why as much as mud should be recovered from the waste. Meanwhile, the OBM is more harmful to the environment if the cuttings from drillings are not well treated before discharge. As leading manufacturer and solution provider, GN Solids Control has designed and supplied to many different end users with its professional solution for drilling cuttings treatment. For oil base mud cuttings, recently, another new set of such system was successfully use in CNPC, one of the 3 largest oil companies in China, both their engineers and operators are giving good comments.

This system includes:

1. GNCD930 vertical cuttings dryer, which is specially designed for treating the oil based cuttings, it is like a washing machine. By using screen baskets of different mesh sizes per cuttings condition, and after the vertical cuttings dryer, the oil on cutting could be reduced to below 0.5%.

2. The second treating machine is a high speed decanter centrifuge. In this project, the end user chose GNLW363CG-VFD, a 14 inch diameter bowl decanter centrifuge, with variable speed up to 3200RPM. It is used for further treatment of drilling fluid discharged from the vertical cuttings dryer.

3. Transferring equipment. For transferring the drilling cuttings, GN has different suggestions based on customers’ jobsite layout and cuttings location. Normally, if the cuttings treatment system is alongside the rig and used for treating the cuttings direct from solids control system, screw conveyor is good choice to collect cuttings from shaker and transfer to hopper of vertical cuttings dryer. If the wed cuttings are from a pit or pond, we recommend GNSP vacuum pump.

GN BIG BOWL CENTRIFUGE

By far, the decanter centrifuge is a quite efficient equipment for separating the solids from the liquid, which is widely used in many industries form the winery, plant oil to the energy industry like the oil and gas drilling, waste management, cuttings treatment and oily sludge separation. Not long ago, 2 sets of GNLW764-VFD centrifuges were delivered to a desert jobsite for a coal mine project, for washing the coals.
When a place is remote, especially in a desert place, all resources are more precious than usual. In that project, the decanter centrifuges are only a part of the whole project but are playing an important role. They are requested to run continuously and to treat around 100 cubic meter material in each hour, in order to save cost by two means: one is to collect the limited water to be reused in next washing procedure, the second is to dry the coal and finally change it into money. The more water to be recycled, the lower cost the project pay for, and the more coal to be collected, the more benefit the project earn from.

In last blog, we introduced the shale shaker and mud cleaner in a compact mud recycling system produced by GN Solids Control for the SINOPEC. In this system, there are in all 4 steps of separation, with the first step as shale shaker, second step as the mud cleaner with 1 of 10 inch desander cone and 8 of 4 inch sized desilter cones. The dewatering centrifuge is the fourth step separation for the fine particles left in the liquid.

Why need a decanter centrifuge?
Till now, the decanter centrifuge is a second to none choice for choosing out the particles in the drilling mud between 2 to 5 microns. Even for finer particles, the decanter centrifuge can handle them by adopting a chemical dosing or so called flocculating unit.

How to choose a suitable centrifuge?
1. First of all, to choose a suitable size of centrifuge, the diameter of a centrifuge determines the treating capacity of a centrifuge. In this project, the end user chose GNLW363-VFD, with a 14 inch bowl diameter while the speed is typically 3200RPM, which is quite popular in drilling solids control and drilling waste management applications. Besides this most popular model, GN has centrifuges from small size as 9 inch bowl to big size up to 30 inch diameter bowl.
2. The centrifuge bowl diameter ratio determines the particle size to be separated out, for example, the longer centrifuge is, the dryer solids come out. Among GNLW centrifuge models, there are bowl length diameter ratios for option from 2 to 4.
3. And the higher speed a centrifuge has, the finer particles to be separated out. Per different speeds’ range, there are middle speed centrifuge and high speed centrifuge. Normally a middle speed means around 1800RPM, for example as the big bowl centrifuge GNLW452, with a typical speed as 1800RPM, and a bowl of 18 inch diameter, which is mostly used for barite recovering in a solids control system.

Last week, one international contactor for mining industry started their project in Australia, among the separation line, two green colored equipment were significantly shown. They are big bowl centrifuges from GN Solids Control, a leading manufacturer for industrial separating equipment manufacturer based in China.

GN Solids Control has been designing and producing the separating equipment like shale shakers, mud cleaners, decanter centrifuges, vertical cuttings dryers for many years. At first, the equipment are mainly used for the oil and gas drilling solids control systems, and later, as GN’s quickly increasing development of technology and producing capability, GN Solids Control has enlarged its centrifuge model range from 14 inch bowl to bigger ones and smaller ones. Those 2 sets of GNLW764A decanter centrifuges are till now the biggest sized centrifuges made by GN Solids Control, with a bowl diameter of 30 inch and a treating capacity up to 120cbm/hr.

Besides the giant bowl decanter centrifuge GNLW764A-VFD, GN Solids Control has various centrifuge models with size as small as 9 inch diameter bowl, up to 30 inch diameter bowl, including the 14 inch bowl , 18 inch bowl, 22 inch bowl and etc.

For each size, there are different models available per different bowl length diameter ratios. Normally the comparably longer bowl a centrifuge has, a cleaner separation result it could give. Among GNLW series decanter centrifuges, take the 18 inch bowl diameter as example, there are different ratios like 2, 3 and 4. GNLW452 is a stout shaped decanter centrifuge with middle speed and shorter bowl, which is mostly used for barite recovery in a solids control system based on the barite size and gravity. GNLW453 is a high speed centrifuge for waste management systems, or as the dewatering centrifuge, for fine particles. While the GNLW454 is quite suitable for waste water separation with a longer bowl up to 4 times of bowl diameter, around 61 inches.

GNLW764, the 30 inch bowl diameter centrifuge has a bowl length-diameter up to 4. And this giant could separate quite fine particles at a large capacity, even after a dewatering unit.

In order to meet customers’ request and to help solve the problems faced in front of customers from the more and more strict environmental protection rules, GN Solids Control designed and put into market a comprehensive design for the oily sludge separation unit, and now GN Solids Control is leading in this industry.
In recent 3 years, GN Solids Control has customized several sets of similar systems, and such systems are being used in many different countries both in domestic China and overseas. It is widely used for treating the discharged slurry and sands from crude oil tank cleaning, oily waste discharged from refineries, and the viscosity oily waste from solids control for oil and gas drilling. It helps to reduce the cost for waste transportation and oil recycle, and gained good comments from under users.

OILY SLUDGE SEPARATION

A complete system is combined by several sections:
1. Pre heating and pre mixing system. In this system, a mixing tank with heating facilities are being employed. A chemical dosing system is used for adding some polymer or something else into the oily sludge and heating is used for reducing the viscosity. Later, the sludge is to be treated by a shale shaker, by which the large particles are separated out.
2. A high speed decanter centrifuge is used in next step for treating out the fine particles from the liquid. Floating unit is kind of oil water separation, and the light of weight oil will float on surface of liquid and it would be scraped out to an oil tank. The settled down particles would be drained from bottom of the IPC unit.
3. A disc centrifuge is used to separate out the small amount of particles from the liquid, and further separate the oil from water. Then the water flows into the water tank, while oil flows into the oil tank.
In the complete system, by using the complicated manifold and valves, the end user can bypass or invite into loop some equipment based on the sludge’s condition.
