It is a common knowledge that in the solids control system for a drilling rig, no matter for the land rigs or for the offshores, the shale shaker plays the most important role for separating out the solids waste from the mud recycling unit, and it is also the shale shaker which waste the most of the liquid on the cuttings discharged from the shaker. That’s why, in many countries, there is a must to equip another drilling cuttings treatment system alongside the rig.
A drilling cuttings waste management system is used for further separation of the drilling waste discharged from the shale shaker and mud cleaner, most of which are from the shakers. For one thing, the drilling cuttings waste management system helps to dry the cuttings for later transportation, on the other hand, it increased the drilling liquid amount to be recycled. Both are saving money. In case of OBM mud, the operators always need a vertical cuttings dryer and a high speed decanter centrifuge, while for WBM mud, operators always use a high G drying shaker and a decanter centrifuge.

Although in recent years, a large percentage of GN Solids Control’s products are sold to different industries besides the solids control projects, solids control systems and equipment are still GN’s traditional business of which GN’s brand is still quite well known and widely accepted. And GN customers in oil and gas solids control industry are introducing some of GN new products into their traditional works.

Vacuum pump is one of the most popular products of recent 2 years ever since GN firstly showed one of such pump with a capacity of 40 cbm/hr in CIPPE Oil Show in Beijing for year 2017. In the following year, also in CIPPE oil show, GN showed another model alongside with GNSP-40A, which had half capacity and need half air consumption, with a compact and movable design, the GNSP-20A.

The vacuum pumps are quite powerful small machine. It could handle a material with quite large particles size, as long as the particle could pass the hose’s diameter, and with some liquidate. Such like the sands and small stones. Talking about transportation power, take the GNSP-40A for instance, it can suck the material from 50 meters away and deliver it to more than 100 meters away. Now it is widely used in oily sludge separation systems in refineries, in chemical industries, for tank bottom cleaning works, and for drilling cuttings transfer in oil and gas drilling.

Comparing with other pump types, like the GNSB series centrifugal pumps GN provides for the desander/desilter feeding, for the jet mud mixing, or with the submersible slurry pumps for feeding the centrifuge and sucking mud from mud pit, the vacuum pump, although powerful, it has some shortcoming like non continuous operating. Recently, GN just finished another set of solids control system to Australia, which is going to be used for oil and gas industry and now the system is at sea for sailing to Australia. Seldom solids control manufacturers could reach such a high standard of Australia, which are even higher than the USA and Europe. But this system is not the first one. Besides the normal standards for the oil and gas industries, the Australian market has its specially high standards:

1. For electrical components, including the motors, cables, glands and control panels, all have to meet both IECEX standards and Australia standards.

2. Walkways and guardrails must reach very specific standards, like the max and min distance of gaps. Lifting pads and lifting eyes all have to meet safety standards, and marked with SWL.

3. Walkways and stairs are made of high duty fiber glass, instead of gratings or checkered plates.

The augers are also called the screw conveyors, they are used in GN drilling cuttings waste management system as a matching equipment alongside with vertical cuttings dryers and decanter centrifuges.
In some rig sites, it is requested by the law that for each drilling rig, there must be a set of drilling cuttings waste management system, and totally in the rig site, there should be at least 2 augers: first one is below the discharge chutes of shale shakers, desander cones and desilter cones, that is used to collect the cuttings. Second one is used as a sloping angle to transfer the cuttings from the first one to the vertical cuttings dryer. In a word, the augers could be positioned sloping or horizontal for different destinations. In a word, GNSC screw conveyors could work in a group or singly, and they could be used for mixing, allocating, dewatering, discharging and etc.

As an essential part of a waste management system, in order to well match the other equipment and easy for transportation and locating, all GN screw conveyor models are designed in same length sections, each of 12 ft. And they are of different diameters for providing different transferring capacities. There are 10 inch diameters, 12 inch diameters, 14 inch diameters and 16 inch diameters. In this condition, most of spare parts are interchangeable, which reduced the spare parts cost and enhanced the convenience for the end users. Centrifuges are quite popular in separation industries, in oil and gas solids control, in drilling cuttings waste management, and in oily sludge separation projects. It is perfect solution for separating out particles from 2 microns to 5 microns. The centrifuges are playing more and more important role. But still, it is more difficult to operate the centrifuge well and let the centrifuge to work more efficiently.

There are some suggestions to help improving the centrifuges’ performance:
1. Before using the decanter centrifuge, make sure the material which enters the centrifuge are not so big for the centrifuges, in order to avoid blocking of centrifuges. For instance, a high speed centrifuge is capable to separate out particles from 2 microns to 5 microns. In practice, particles no larger than 2mm could enter the centrifuges. So it is suggested to use a shaker unit before the centrifuge.
2. How about when the particles are too small? When there are so many extra fine particles, it would be difficult for the centrifuge to separate the particles out. In this case, a chemical dosing unit is invited before the centrifuge. By adding flocculant into the material, the extra particles flocculate into bigger ones in order to be separated by centrifuge.
3. If the material is of too high viscosity, some polymers fed by the chemical dosing unit into the material, to lower down the viscosity. Then the separation result would be much enhanced.
4. Confirm the material content before choosing a suitable bowl rotating speed and a suitable differential speed. The material content information includes: solids content percentage, the distribution of each particle size, and etc. Such information helps the operator to adjust the centrifuge parameters.
