Last month, GN Solids Control has delivered a liquid mud plant with totally 7500BBL volume to a client from South America. A mud plant is a place used for prepare the drilling mud for drilling rigs, it could be regarded as a mud station. In some mud plant, the used mud can be also treated then returned to solids control system. 7500BBL mud plant is not a small one.

This liquid mud plant manufactured by GN Solids Control is combined by following sections:

1. Mud mixing tank with agitators. This tank is used for prepare the drilling mud by adding useful chemicals into it through a mud mixing hopper. This mud mixing tank also has a storage capacity of 7500BBL.

2. Mud mixing hopper and mud mixing pump. In practice, a mud mixing hopper and a mud mixing pump could be regarded as a integrate mud mixing unit, which can be located on a mud mixing tank or separately besides and mud mixing tank. The end user can choose parallel hoppers together and 2 centrifugal pumps to be linked in parallel. Either pump could serve for either hopper, one for use, the other back up.

3. Vertical mud storage tanks, totally 14 sets, each with 500BBL volume. In order to save space, those storage tanks are made in cylinder shape vertically. All tanks are equipped with level meter to show the mud volume inside. By well-designed pipelines, pump from outside those tanks can suck mud from each tank.

Besides the mud liquid plant, GN Solids Control can also provide waste management systems for both drilling cuttings treatment and drilling fluids treatment, including chemical dosing and decanter centrifuge. For mud liquid plant, clients can invest in such a system to treat the used drilling mud, to remove the particles from the drilling liquid and return the clean mud back to the mud plant.

1. Vertical cuttings dryers 2 sets: GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers are designed for treating oil based mud drilling cuttings and per some projects’ feedback, they are also suitable for water based mud, too. Such drilling cuttings are always from shaker discharge of a drilling system, quite muddy with high water content. By using the vertical cuttings dryer, the OOC could be reduced to 0.5%.

2. High speed waste management decanter centrifuges, 2 sets. High speed decanter centrifuge is always located after the vertical cuttings dryer for making the liquid phase cleaner. It has a VFD control panel for adjusting speed and differential speed to achieve an ideal result as per liquid condition.

3. Screw conveyors, 6 sets: screw conveyors could be used under shaker to collect muddy cuttings and also used to feed the vertical cuttings dryer. They can be horizontal or sloping based on jobsite layout.

There are several different types of drilling muds used for different drilling conditions, mainly divided into 3 types, the water based mud, oil based mud and SBM. The mostly used ones are WBM and OBM.

For deep well drillings, the OBM is most common solution. Considering it’s components, the oil based mud is more expensive than water based mud, that’s why as much as mud should be recovered from the waste. Meanwhile, the OBM is more harmful to the environment if the cuttings from drillings are not well treated before discharge. As leading manufacturer and solution provider, GN Solids Control has designed and supplied to many different end users with its professional solution for drilling cuttings treatment. For oil base mud cuttings, recently, another new set of such system was successfully use in CNPC, one of the 3 largest oil companies in China, both their engineers and operators are giving good comments.

This system includes:

1. GNCD930 vertical cuttings dryer, which is specially designed for treating the oil based cuttings, it is like a washing machine. By using screen baskets of different mesh sizes per cuttings condition, and after the vertical cuttings dryer, the oil on cutting could be reduced to below 0.5%.

2. The second treating machine is a high speed decanter centrifuge. In this project, the end user chose GNLW363CG-VFD, a 14 inch diameter bowl decanter centrifuge, with variable speed up to 3200RPM. It is used for further treatment of drilling fluid discharged from the vertical cuttings dryer.

3. Transferring equipment. For transferring the drilling cuttings, GN has different suggestions based on customers’ jobsite layout and cuttings location. Normally, if the cuttings treatment system is alongside the rig and used for treating the cuttings direct from solids control system, screw conveyor is good choice to collect cuttings from shaker and transfer to hopper of vertical cuttings dryer. If the wed cuttings are from a pit or pond, we recommend GNSP vacuum pump.

GN SHAKER AND MUD CLEANER FOR OFFSHORE

In offshore projects, cause of the distance from the land, all material must be used to the most, the most liquid should be reused and least cuttings to be transported back to land. The shaker is used for separating out the most of solids, for handling the heaviest burden, the high performance and strong structure of shaker is quite important. Following features of GNZS series shakers ensures the shaker’s quality and performance:

It is a common knowledge that in the solids control system for a drilling rig, no matter for the land rigs or for the offshores, the shale shaker plays the most important role for separating out the solids waste from the mud recycling unit, and it is also the shale shaker which waste the most of the liquid on the cuttings discharged from the shaker. That’s why, in many countries, there is a must to equip another drilling cuttings treatment system alongside the rig.
A drilling cuttings waste management system is used for further separation of the drilling waste discharged from the shale shaker and mud cleaner, most of which are from the shakers. For one thing, the drilling cuttings waste management system helps to dry the cuttings for later transportation, on the other hand, it increased the drilling liquid amount to be recycled. Both are saving money. In case of OBM mud, the operators always need a vertical cuttings dryer and a high speed decanter centrifuge, while for WBM mud, operators always use a high G drying shaker and a decanter centrifuge.
In some cases, the ViST Shaker screen device could replace the drilling cuttings waste management system, or at least to some degree, reduced the work for the cuttings separation works. Generally speaking, the ViST shaker screen device has following advantages:

The augers are also called the screw conveyors, they are used in GN drilling cuttings waste management system as a matching equipment alongside with vertical cuttings dryers and decanter centrifuges.
In some rig sites, it is requested by the law that for each drilling rig, there must be a set of drilling cuttings waste management system, and totally in the rig site, there should be at least 2 augers: first one is below the discharge chutes of shale shakers, desander cones and desilter cones, that is used to collect the cuttings. Second one is used as a sloping angle to transfer the cuttings from the first one to the vertical cuttings dryer. In a word, the augers could be positioned sloping or horizontal for different destinations. In a word, GNSC screw conveyors could work in a group or singly, and they could be used for mixing, allocating, dewatering, discharging and etc.

As an essential part of a waste management system, in order to well match the other equipment and easy for transportation and locating, all GN screw conveyor models are designed in same length sections, each of 12 ft. And they are of different diameters for providing different transferring capacities. There are 10 inch diameters, 12 inch diameters, 14 inch diameters and 16 inch diameters. In this condition, most of spare parts are interchangeable, which reduced the spare parts cost and enhanced the convenience for the end users. GNSC series screw conveyors are using the wear proof material for a obviously longer service life than its peers’.
GNSC series screw conveyors are not only used in the drilling cuttings waste management systems, they are also quite widely used in construction, chemical, power plants, coal mining and other industries.
