Drilling cuttings are solids discharge from the drilling rig solids controls system, from the shakers, desander and desilters. After the solids control system’s first 3 phases separating, the drilling fluids are returned back to the system without the solids particle. But the separated-out particles are still too wet. For one thing, it is a waste for valuable drilling fluid. Secondly, it could damage to the environment if disposed directly. That’s why it is not only necessary but also mandatory to do some further treatment for the drilling cuttings.
GN Solids Control has zero discharge solutions for both WBM and OBM. And this order, combining the vertical cuttings dryer and decanter centrifuge, is for the oil based mud. A vertical cuttings dryer is specially designed for the oil based mud separation. GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers could dry the drilling cuttings to reach OOC value to 5%. The vertical cuttings dryer is running as the drying step of a washing machine. The vertical cuttings dryer is equipped with a screen basket with certain mesh number. Fluids pass the mesh and collected, while cuttings are stopped by mesh and falls down.
GNLW series decanter centrifuges with VFD control panels are used after the vertical cuttings dryer to remove the particles from 2 to 5 microns from the liquid. Most common model is GNLW363CG-VFD, a medium sized centrifuge with a high rotating speed. But for bigger treating capacity, GN has GNLW453C-VFD and GNLW553-VFD available, both of high rotating speed while bowl sizes are respectively 18 inch and 22 inch. Does a HDD mud recycling system need a decanter centrifuge? How to use the decanter centrifuge for HDD?

In most cases, there is no need to use a decanter centrifuge in a HDD mud recycling system. One thing is because the drilling mud for HDD project is not as complicated as the mud for the oil and gas solids control, and even in some oil and gas solids control systems, there is no centrifuge. The second is because that the cost for a decanter centrifuge is high, the centrifuge itself is more expensive than other equipment, and the centrifuge need professional staff to operate it and need more careful maintenance.

But according to the newly established laws and registrations in a lot of countries, the treating result is of higher standard than before, and now it is quite necessary to employ a decanter centrifuge for HDD mud recycling system. Like in China, the leading HDD contractor CPP added into their new mud recycling system a decanter centrifuge.
GNLW452C is a quite suitable model as a HDD decanter centrifuge, it is used after the desilter cones and the middle speed centrifuge is to separate out the particles from 5 to 7 microns. The big bowl design enables GNLW452 to have a large capacity.

If we have an existing HDD mud recycling system, how can we add a GNLW452 into it?

GN has solutions and the design was well tested at jobsite. The GNLW452 could be mounted on a skid and a screw pump and the control panel ( as a VFD control panel) is mounted on skid, below the centrifuge. The screw pump is used to feed the centrifuge from desilter cone. Solids discharge are collected and liquid flows back to desilter tank. This circle also helps to reduce the mud weight.

To achieve zero-discharge goal for treated drill cutting, the GN series solidification unit’s function is to added proper ratio of bounding material to the treated drilling cutting and mixing them together for bounding and hardening.  The finished bounding drilling cutting with other chemical mixing together will avoid soil penetrating that outcome the soil pollution.  The hardening agents should be well mixed with the drilling cuttings for a certain time, than by means of physical and chemical transformation, the harmful and toxic components are transformed, sealed and fixed into safe materials and become some other solids without pollution and to be used as construction materials. Ever since the establishment of GN Solids Control seven years ago, Australia has been the market of GN Solids Control and most of their purchases have been mostly the solids control systems and mud recycling systems for the HDD or other drillings.

But now as the demand for environment protection all over the world is becoming more and more important, more and more drilling companies have paid an eye to the waste management solutions for further treating the drilling cuttings and the drilling liquid, in order to give the least damage to environment meanwhile reduce the drilling cost mostly, by deleting as much solids and well discharging them, and recycling as much as drilling liquid for future use.

Not long ago, an Australian company purchased 2 sets of GN Big bowl centrifuges, GNLW553-VFD, and now the centrifuges are well tested and ready for delivery.

What are the main specification of GNLW553-VFD Decanter Centrifuge?

1. bowl diameter of GNLW553-VFD decanter centrifuge is 22 inch, big bowl. By having this bowl diameter the max capacity designed for this centrifuge is 90 cbm/hour, equal to 400GPM.
2. a long ratio of length and diameter. This value is 3, so the length of the bowl is 71 inch. 3 is a perfect and practical length-diameter ratio, it gives an idea drying level of the solids discharge.
3. high speed up to 3000 RPM designed speed and typical speed up to 2500 RPM.
4. VFD control panal, GN uses positive pressurized control panel which could be used for high temperature condition and much safer than flame proof.

In early this year, GN has delivered a slurry unit to a well know middle east company which has business and projects covering many sections of oil and gas industry, including the construction and pipeline laying projects, and also the refinery of oil.
In most persons’ mind, the best equipments and most advanced equipments are from USA or European companies. But GN Solids Control has changed their mind with good quality equipments and reliable service. This is the first time this company chooses a Chinese supplier, before that, they purchase only from USA, like the Vermeer rigs and Derrick shakers.
The first deal with GN is like a trial deal. The operation manager say, it is their first time to use a desanding plant, and it is also the first time they buy from China. If this mud system works well, the second order will come soon.
GN Solids Control didn’t fail in satisfying the clients, within the first 10 days of working on jobsite, the middle east client sent the second order, of the same desanding plant from GN. And this mud system for the second order, was delivered to the loading port last week and soon, within 30 days, it will arrive to the new owner.

2. equipments contained in the slurry unit: double deck shale shaker with 2 sets of 10 inch diameter desander cones, the lower deck shaker is first separation procedure and the desander cones are the second procedure, while the upper deck shaker plays as a drying shaker for the ones, with finer screens than the lower deck. Slurry pump or centrifugal pump for feeding the desander cones.
3. compact design, with a dimension suitable for transportation in a 40ft container.

What’s the different between the economic mud recycling system and the high configuration mud recycling system?

Normally, the economic recycling systems are used for Bored Pile or TBM Drilling works, in such works, the requested standard is not so high comparing with HDD systems. So there is normally no mixing system for this system, just separating step is OK. In GN’s design, the 2 separation steps are designed in a compact equipment, which is combined of desander cones and a double deck shale shaker. The lower deck is used as the first separation shale shaker, which is used to delete the particles larger than 100 microns. The upper deck shaker is used like the drying shaker of the desander. For the second separation step, the particles larger than 40 microns are separated out.

What capacities available?

In order to serve the customers’ need quickly and well, GN designed standard models for the most common capacities, like 200GPM, 500GPM and 1000GPM, with GN models respectively GNMS-200D, GNMS-500D and GNMS1000D.
