GN Solids Control is one of the leading brands for solids control and waste management system, and second to none ranks among Chinese manufacturers in this industry. Recently, GN delivered main equipment for 2 sets of drilling cuttings waste management systems for CNPC.


Drilling cuttings are solids discharge from the drilling rig solids controls system, from the shakers, desander and desilters. After the solids control system’s first 3 phases separating, the drilling fluids are returned back to the system without the solids particle. But the separated-out particles are still too wet. For one thing, it is a waste for valuable drilling fluid. Secondly, it could damage to the environment if disposed directly. That’s why it is not only necessary but also mandatory to do some further treatment for the drilling cuttings.
GN Solids Control has zero discharge solutions for both WBM and OBM. And this order, combining the vertical cuttings dryer and decanter centrifuge, is for the oil based mud. A vertical cuttings dryer is specially designed for the oil based mud separation. GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers could dry the drilling cuttings to reach OOC value to 5%. The vertical cuttings dryer is running as the drying step of a washing machine. The vertical cuttings dryer is equipped with a screen basket with certain mesh number. Fluids pass the mesh and collected, while cuttings are stopped by mesh and falls down.
GNLW series decanter centrifuges with VFD control panels are used after the vertical cuttings dryer to remove the particles from 2 to 5 microns from the liquid. Most common model is GNLW363CG-VFD, a medium sized centrifuge with a high rotating speed. But for bigger treating capacity, GN has GNLW453C-VFD and GNLW553-VFD available, both of high rotating speed while bowl sizes are respectively 18 inch and 22 inch. A solidification unit or called solidification system is an efficient and economic solution for the treatment of drilling cuttings from both oil based mud and water based mud. Besides, it could also handle the sludge from some cuttings or waste pit. The principle is not so complicated, but the performance and continuous working ability are defining a solidification unit.

Since three years ago when GN Solids Control firstly designed and put into use the first set of GNGH Solidification unit, with the valuable feedbacks and experiences from both domestic China and abroad, GN improved the solidification unit several times. In a result, it is now more human oriented and easier to operate. This ready for delivery solidification unit is a newly designed one, and it would be its first show on client’s jobsite in a few days. It has following features comparing with previous design:

1. It is more compact than before, with a smaller cuttings feeding hopper just above the coulter mixer the solidification unit itself are changed from two pieces into one piece. It is easier for transportation and later rig up on jobsite after transportation.
2. This new one is automatically controlled by a PLC control panel. All electrical components from brand Schneider, ABB or Siemens. Main operating data could be seen clearly on the screen and touching screen is easy for operators to control.
3. Mixing time could be controlled automatically and manually. Comparing with last model, this one is equipped with an electrical valve on discharge port of the unit, by using this, the operator could control the time period for the material to stay in the mixer for a better and adjustable mixing result.
4. Three VFD’s for the feeding. In this system, there are 3 feeding hoppers, all of which are VFD controlled by the control panel, then the fed proportion of chemicals, cement and cuttings could be adjusted according to the on time being conditions.

Recently, GN has produced for 2 different clients who worked for similar projects, with following equipment and solutions:
1. GN big bowl 22 inch diameter decanter centrifuges.
2. GN chemical dosing unit
3. GN standard containers.


GN has been providing this design for many years, and the technology is quite mature:
1. GNDU2000 Chemical dosing unit. GN has been providing the chemical dosing unit or so called the dewatering unit for many years, since some of GN clients are using GN centrifuges as dewatering centrifuges and prefer GN to make compact design for them. A chemical dosing unit is used to treat the material by some chemical methods, for example, to add some material to reduce the viscosity of material, or to flocculate the extra fine particles into larger ones, which are suitable for centrifuge use.
2. GNLW553C-VFD decanter centrifuge is a big bowl decanter centrifuge with a treating capacity up t to 90 cbm per hour, and the rotating speed could reach 3000 rpm. It is quite suitable for drilling liquid management, especially being used together with chemical dosing system. Normally, the centrifuge treating capacity for material after flocculation would be greatly reduced, that’s why a big bowl centrifuge with a large treating capacity is always used for this application.
3. 20 ft containers for housing the centrifuge and chemical dosing system, which is quite popular design. For one thing, it is more convenient and easy to transport the system when the main equipment are in standard containers. Secondly, the containers give a shield to the equipment, providing a suitable temperature and clean condition. Thirdly, the 2 sets of 20 ft containers could be put one under another, in this way, less room to be occupied.
In this design, GN engineers designed the round shaped ladders for the upper located container with the big bowl decanter centrifuge, when transporting, the ladder could be put into the container.

Decanter centrifuge is the most important and most widely used equipment in the solids control system and waste management system, it could cover such following roles:
1. middle speed decanter centrifuge for solids control system, for recovering the barite from the drilling mud. Normally, for this application we need a big bowl centrifuge to work at 1800RMP and the ideal length-diameter ratio of the bowl is 2. So GNLW 452 with 18 inch bowl diameter is an ideal choice.
2. high speed decanter centrifuge for the fine particles with diameter ranging from 2 to 5 microns. In most cases GN clients use GNLW363 with 14 inch bowl diameter for this use. For solids control high speed decanter centrifuge, an economic configuration GNLW363 with fixed speed is OK.
3. drilling fluids waste management and drilling cuttings waste management systems, we suggest you to use GNLW363 high configurations for option, it uses the best material and serves as VFD controlled control panels, to achieve different speeds per jobsite condition.
Besides GNLW363 and GNLW452, which are most popular models, GN has different centrifuges with different sizes, like the GNLW223, with 9 inch diameter bowl as baby centrifuge, GNLW453 big bowl centrifuge, with 18 inch bowl diameter as GNLW452 but the length-diameter ratio as 3, and also GNLW553 with 22 inch diameter bowl as super big bowl decanter centrifuge.
Since the previous producing yard is not enough to meet the requests from clients, GN constructed the 2nd factory especially for decanter centrifuges.

Decanter centrifuge is one of the most important equipment in a complete solids control system and a waste management system not only for the drilling cuttings waste management but also the further treatment for the drilling mud. In some projects, the shale shakers with different API number shaker screens and the decanter centrifuges with different rotating speed, they can totally replace the desander and desilter cones. That’s why a professional decanter centrifuge and a efficient centrifuge feeding pump are very important to the drilling mud system.

According to the control panel, the decanter centrifuge could be divided into 2 kinds, the fixed speed one and the VFD controlled one. And the centrifuge feeding pumps are of different types also, some are suitable for both the fixed speed and VFD controlled panel.

  1. the centrifugal pumps are most widely used in oil and gas solids control systems, and in theory, it could be the centrifuge feeding pump also, just like it roles for feeding the desander cones and desilter cones and also like the mixing pump. But in fact, it is not so common as centrifuge feeding pump.
  2. the submersible slurry pump. In the solids control system, submersible slurry pump is the most common choice for feeding the centrifuge. Because it is vertically installed, it occupies small foot print on the limited tank surface. And comparing with mono pumps, the submersible slurry pump is less expensive and easy to maintain.
  3. screw pump, which is also called the mono pump is the most popular pump used for feeding the centrifuge especially in the waste management systems. GN recommend this screw pump for feeding the decanter centrifuge, and GNLW363CG-VFD decanter centrifuge, the 3 VFD controls include the VFD control for the screw pump.
