Last week, one international contactor for mining industry started their project in Australia, among the separation line, two green colored equipment were significantly shown. They are big bowl centrifuges from GN Solids Control, a leading manufacturer for industrial separating equipment manufacturer based in China.

GN Solids Control has been designing and producing the separating equipment like shale shakers, mud cleaners, decanter centrifuges, vertical cuttings dryers for many years. At first, the equipment are mainly used for the oil and gas drilling solids control systems, and later, as GN’s quickly increasing development of technology and producing capability, GN Solids Control has enlarged its centrifuge model range from 14 inch bowl to bigger ones and smaller ones. Those 2 sets of GNLW764A decanter centrifuges are till now the biggest sized centrifuges made by GN Solids Control, with a bowl diameter of 30 inch and a treating capacity up to 120cbm/hr.

Besides the giant bowl decanter centrifuge GNLW764A-VFD, GN Solids Control has various centrifuge models with size as small as 9 inch diameter bowl, up to 30 inch diameter bowl, including the 14 inch bowl , 18 inch bowl, 22 inch bowl and etc.

For each size, there are different models available per different bowl length diameter ratios. Normally the comparably longer bowl a centrifuge has, a cleaner separation result it could give. Among GNLW series decanter centrifuges, take the 18 inch bowl diameter as example, there are different ratios like 2, 3 and 4. GNLW452 is a stout shaped decanter centrifuge with middle speed and shorter bowl, which is mostly used for barite recovery in a solids control system based on the barite size and gravity. GNLW453 is a high speed centrifuge for waste management systems, or as the dewatering centrifuge, for fine particles. While the GNLW454 is quite suitable for waste water separation with a longer bowl up to 4 times of bowl diameter, around 61 inches.

GNLW764, the 30 inch bowl diameter centrifuge has a bowl length-diameter up to 4. And this giant could separate quite fine particles at a large capacity, even after a dewatering unit.

After being developed from a solids control manufacturer and focusing on only high quality product manufacturing, GN Solids Control has become more like a separation professional and their salesroom is more and more occupied by some more widely used separation equipment which are suitable for more industries covering the oil and gas solids control, waste management, oily sludge separation, mining, TBM, HDD, food industry and also waste water separation.
Decanter centrifuge is quite an important equipment for the separation work. For example, a middle speed centrifuge could separate out particles from 5 to 8 microns like the expensive barite in the drilling mud, while a high speed decanter centrifuge could separate out the cuttings from 2 to 5 microns. With help of a chemical dosing system, the even smaller particles could be separated out together with a flocculation unit.

Comparing with other separation equipment, a centrifuge has many advantages like continuous operation, easy for maintenance and requesting less chemical components to be invited. GN has a full range of decanter centrifuges with different sizes, including 9 inch diameter bowl, with length-diameter ratio of 3 and 4 ( long or longer), 14 inch diameter bowl, 18 inch diameter bowl and 22 inch ones, they all have models of 3 or 4 as length-diameter ratios. And GN also has 30 inch diameter bowl decanter centrifuge, with a bowl length- diameter up to 4.
Among all those models, the 14 inch bowl models are most popular and economic, which are suitable for many applications. And for this model, GN has also hydraulic control model for option. Recently, one set of hydraulic decanter centrifuge will be shipped to an oversea customer, and it will be used for a big oil drilling company. Meanwhile, some more decanter centrifuges are being built for a safe stock and delivery to clients.

Centrifuges are quite popular in separation industries, in oil and gas solids control, in drilling cuttings waste management, and in oily sludge separation projects. It is perfect solution for separating out particles from 2 microns to 5 microns. The centrifuges are playing more and more important role. But still, it is more difficult to operate the centrifuge well and let the centrifuge to work more efficiently.

There are some suggestions to help improving the centrifuges’ performance:
1. Before using the decanter centrifuge, make sure the material which enters the centrifuge are not so big for the centrifuges, in order to avoid blocking of centrifuges. For instance, a high speed centrifuge is capable to separate out particles from 2 microns to 5 microns. In practice, particles no larger than 2mm could enter the centrifuges. So it is suggested to use a shaker unit before the centrifuge.
2. How about when the particles are too small? When there are so many extra fine particles, it would be difficult for the centrifuge to separate the particles out. In this case, a chemical dosing unit is invited before the centrifuge. By adding flocculant into the material, the extra particles flocculate into bigger ones in order to be separated by centrifuge.
3. If the material is of too high viscosity, some polymers fed by the chemical dosing unit into the material, to lower down the viscosity. Then the separation result would be much enhanced.
4. Confirm the material content before choosing a suitable bowl rotating speed and a suitable differential speed. The material content information includes: solids content percentage, the distribution of each particle size, and etc. Such information helps the operator to adjust the centrifuge parameters.

Vacuum pumps are GN’s new design and new products for the oily sludge transportation. Besides oily sludge, it could also handle many other kinds of materials like the sand and small rocks from construction, the drilling cuttings from the solids control system, industrial waste, animal waste, mud tank bottom sludge, and industry slurries. Take the big pump model as example, the GNSP40A, It could handle the particles with large size up to 50mm and with solids content up to 80%.That’s why it is also called solids pump.
Ever since GN built the first set of vacuum pump and put it into market, it gains lots of eyeballs. Till now, all vacuum pumps the GNSP40A’s and GNSP20A’s have been sold out. New orders are coming all over the world, and the coming 12 sets which are scheduled to be ready by end of June are already purchased by some clients. GN Solids Control is planning to produce more as stock to matching the demands of clients.
Why could those pumps become so popular?

1. Cause it is suitable for the applications faced by the operators. For example in the oily sludge, there are always lots of particles which are large for normal pumps and also it is of high viscosity. This vacuum pump could handle the comparably bigger particles with high solids content.
2. It is suitable for Explosive Proof standard, even for IECEX/ATEX Zone 1. Cause it is all mechanical equipment, no electric components applied, it is fully explosive proof.
3. It could suck the material from 100 meter away and discharge it to around 1000 meter away. That’s why some operators are using it to transfer liquid from a hole deep into underground with an opening from ground.
4. Small in size and easy for transportation. The GNSP20A and GNSP10A are portable with wheels, total volume smaller than 2 cubic meters.
5. Powerful, which is the last and most important feature.
Those 2 vacuum pumps are of model GNSP40A, with a large capacity of 40cbm per hour. They are just ready for being delivered to a UAE client.

Drilling cuttings are solids discharge from the drilling rig solids controls system, from the shakers, desander and desilters. After the solids control system’s first 3 phases separating, the drilling fluids are returned back to the system without the solids particle. But the separated-out particles are still too wet. For one thing, it is a waste for valuable drilling fluid. Secondly, it could damage to the environment if disposed directly. That’s why it is not only necessary but also mandatory to do some further treatment for the drilling cuttings.
GN Solids Control has zero discharge solutions for both WBM and OBM. And this order, combining the vertical cuttings dryer and decanter centrifuge, is for the oil based mud. A vertical cuttings dryer is specially designed for the oil based mud separation. GNCD930 series vertical cuttings dryers could dry the drilling cuttings to reach OOC value to 5%. The vertical cuttings dryer is running as the drying step of a washing machine. The vertical cuttings dryer is equipped with a screen basket with certain mesh number. Fluids pass the mesh and collected, while cuttings are stopped by mesh and falls down.
GNLW series decanter centrifuges with VFD control panels are used after the vertical cuttings dryer to remove the particles from 2 to 5 microns from the liquid. Most common model is GNLW363CG-VFD, a medium sized centrifuge with a high rotating speed. But for bigger treating capacity, GN has GNLW453C-VFD and GNLW553-VFD available, both of high rotating speed while bowl sizes are respectively 18 inch and 22 inch. A solidification unit or called solidification system is an efficient and economic solution for the treatment of drilling cuttings from both oil based mud and water based mud. Besides, it could also handle the sludge from some cuttings or waste pit. The principle is not so complicated, but the performance and continuous working ability are defining a solidification unit.

Since three years ago when GN Solids Control firstly designed and put into use the first set of GNGH Solidification unit, with the valuable feedbacks and experiences from both domestic China and abroad, GN improved the solidification unit several times. In a result, it is now more human oriented and easier to operate. This ready for delivery solidification unit is a newly designed one, and it would be its first show on client’s jobsite in a few days. It has following features comparing with previous design:

1. It is more compact than before, with a smaller cuttings feeding hopper just above the coulter mixer the solidification unit itself are changed from two pieces into one piece. It is easier for transportation and later rig up on jobsite after transportation.
2. This new one is automatically controlled by a PLC control panel. All electrical components from brand Schneider, ABB or Siemens. Main operating data could be seen clearly on the screen and touching screen is easy for operators to control.
3. Mixing time could be controlled automatically and manually. Comparing with last model, this one is equipped with an electrical valve on discharge port of the unit, by using this, the operator could control the time period for the material to stay in the mixer for a better and adjustable mixing result.
4. Three VFD’s for the feeding. In this system, there are 3 feeding hoppers, all of which are VFD controlled by the control panel, then the fed proportion of chemicals, cement and cuttings could be adjusted according to the on time being conditions.
