A drilling mud mixing system is quite popular in drilling mud systems for both oil and gas drilling and other drilling works like HDD and etc, because during drilling there is always loss of bentonite and other necessary chemicals to the drilling fluids, in order to keep the drilling fluids to be suitable for drilling, such components have to be added into the drilling fluids in time. A mud mixing system is also needed in a mud plant, where the used mud should be re-treated and prepared for future use.

A complete mud mixing system should contain following equipment:

1. A mud mixing hopper, which is a venture hopper. It is mainly used for input the bentonite. GN has 2 models of mud mixing hoppers, the bigger model GNSLDSB uses 40mm nozzle and inlet and outlet of 6 inch, while the smaller model GNSLDMB uses 20mm nozzle and inlet and outlet of 4 inch. They could be linked to GNSB series centrifugal pumps to combine a complete mud mixing unit.

2. A centrifugal pump. GNSB series centrifugal pumps are one of GN popular products. They are fully interchangeable with Magnum pumps even in small parts. GN has centrifugal pumps from 7.5kw to 75kw, with capacity ranging from 35cbm/hr to 320cbm/hr. They could be suitable for most drilling works covering both oil and gas drilling, HDD projects and some TBM’s.

3. QTY of mud mixing hopper and mud mixing pumps depends on the jobsite condition and the consideration of the end user. Normally, in a continuous working project of a large project, clients always prefer a dual hopper design with parallel centrifugal pumps. Hoppers could be one under use and the other back up, so are the pumps. By connected pipelines, either hopper can be linked to either pump to mix liquid from any tank. Comparing with centrifugal pumps, the hoppers are less consumable, that’s why it is not so common to use dual hoppers. Some clients prefer double pump with single hopper. And most popular model is single pump plus hopper.

On the bottom of mixing tank in a complete drilling mud solids control system, there are always 2 sets of centrifugal pumps installed there. These 2 centrifugal pumps are parallel connected, by means of complicated valves and pipes, these so called mixing pumps could serve for various functions more than mixing when connected with other equipments.

Here, we cited the 3 main functions of mixing pumps.

  1. Traditional function as mixing pumps when connected with mixing hoppers.

As the 2 centrifugal pumps are called mixing pumps, they are connected to 2 mixing hoppers installed on tank top. The inlets of centrifugal pumps are connected with pipelines leading to mixing tank, and next storage tank. Such pipelines are controlled by valves, and therefore, either centrifugal pump can be fed from either tank, and also could feed either hopper.

  1. As mud pump feeding pumps.

There is a bypass pipeline on outlet pipe of centrifugal pumps, when the valves to mud tank is shut down and valve to mud pump is open, the pumps could feed mud from mixing tank or storage tank to the mud pumps, via which, the well treated drilling mud could return to drilling system.

  1. As mud gun feeding pumps.20141101_102604

Another bypass pipeline on outlet pipe of centrifugal pumps are directed to mud gun pipeline on the cubic pipe by side of mud tanks. This pipe is used for feeding the mud guns. Mud guns are installed all over the tanks, except for the shaker tank. Besides stirring the mud from settling, mud gun and their pipes are also used to transfer drilling mud from tank to tank.

Mud Hopper Brief Indtrodcution

Mud hopper usually used in mud mixing pump, High shearing mixer. Or the mud hopper can be used as separated device matched with pump to do bentonite configuration and mixing in mud mixing system

Most popular mud hopper is 6 inch low pressure (435~580MPa) type. Mud hoppers Complete with 2 nozzle, venturi, funnel, sack table, 6 inch butterfly, valve all mounted on a base.

GN common mud hopper including 6”(150mm) and 4”(100mm) inlet diameter, the usual input whole dimension is designed as 600x600mm, or 750x750mm according to bentonite bags dimension.

Mud Hopper Work Condition

The mud hopper also be matched with centrifugal pumps (sand pumps), used on HDD, land drilling, and offshore drilling, etc. A butterfly valve is incorporated in the neck of the hopper to adjust flow and to close off the hopper after use.

The working condition of mud hopper usually is mud density 1.5~2.8g/cm3, while mud viscosity is 60~120s. This is usual working condition to provide better performance as well as longer use life to save total cost on drilling.
