Basical information on solids separation

The drilling mud solids and liquid separation (can be said drilling fluid solids control briefly) technology is a special industry to control the suspending particles in drilling mud. After separating harmful solids out and keep useful solid, the drilling fluid will hold capable property for well drilling

The definition on separation between solid and liquid

The solid and liquid separation means the drilling fluid including liquid and solid. Separate solid out of drilling fluid have following function:

1. Recycling expensive and useful solid. Such as recycling barite but disusing fluid

2. Recycling fluid. Such as recycling drilling mud but disusing drill cutting

3. Recycling liquid and solid but disusing partial solid and liquid at the same time

According to most of actual drilling mud separation, we mainly do this separation as recycling a little part of solids but majority of fluid. No matter we choose which drilling fluid process manner, we can’t separate solid out of the drilling fluid totally and make the drilling fluid as pure liquid. Even we must keep some solid in driling fluid, such as bentonite, weighting material, lubrication material, block material, etc.

In common solid-liquid separation equipment, there must be solid in drilling fluid, while some liquid will be brought away by solids

When there is restraint on liquid, while particles will move freely in the fluid under the acceleration condition.  At the same time, we can use sedimentation and buoyance lift manner to separate the solid.

The general information

As we know presently drilling fluids solids control system  is rather important to well drillings. How to configure the equipments and the exact position of each device is the key. If the equipment hold very excellent capacity but without appropriate position will decrease its half effect, while some equipments will be useless.

If the solids control equipment doesn’t have good property or don’t have ideal configuration then the solids in drilling fluid will increase. At this occasion we must use quantities of chemicals to dilute drilling mud, then we have invested much unnecessary cost and it is easy to happen complicated situation in the well bore.

The recycling tank in fluids system

Solids control system should be the equipments combined with recycling tanks. So the recycling tanks is the key parts in solids control system

Drilling fluids tank is used to store, configure, recycle and process the drilling fluid. Its capacity should cater to the largest circulation capacity during the weell drilling as well as the sufficient storage capacity.

Usually we’ll make it as many separated mud containers. Nowadays most manufacturers make the tanks with compartments. If there is no compartment they will make circle pipe to balance  and transfer dirlling fluids between tanks this will leave the fluids at the same level when it is still

Commonly speaking, if we drill a well deep 3200m, the recycling tanks capacity should be not less than 165CBM, and the sotrage tank should be not less than 80CBM, every recycling tank should be 7×2.5x2m=35CBM.

If drill a well deep 4500m, then the recycling tank should be not less than 200CBM, and the sotrage tanks should be not less than 120CBM, and every recycling tank should be 8×2.7×2.1m=45CBM.

For 6000m~8000m well we need drilling fluids tank be not less than 270CBM, and storage tank should be not less than 160CBM. One point, the silting tank should be not too short, at least provide sufficient space for fixing three shale shakers

The normal incorrect configuration on solids control equipments in drilling fluids

Drilling fluids after processed will be expelled  into upper stream of the suction tank. If the overflow of desander and desilter flow into the tank above the pump sution then the desander and desilter can only process 50% drilling fluids come from the well head but the other half flow make the round of them.

There is also manufacturer make centrifugal pump suction and overflow position in the same tank. This will make the fluids as a small circulation and the fluids system will have nearly0% treating capacity.

The general infor on agitator

Mud agitator can be called mud mixer also.  The mud agitator including motor, gear box, shaft, and impeller. The agitator in drilling mud process system called mud agitator. In other industries there are also agitators, such as in chemical industry, the food service industry, etc. But they are not mud agitator any more maybe the physic agitator, or the jam agitator.

Complete mud agitator specs decided by usage industry, the components specs. There are usually following information. The motor, can be explosion proof and common type. As well as the gear box. Then the shaft length, the impeller diameter. Whether there will be stabilizer or not.

Generally we care about more on agitators motors. The main features are, explosion proof type, the speed, the voltage and frequency; if it is explosion proof we also need to know its insulation grade and protection level. Then we need to know the installation type, such as C-Face.

The differential factors

The mud agitator under different working conditions will request related features. Usually, in drilling mud process system there should be one agitator every 3 meters. And other facors are shaft and impellers, etc.

Commonly, the shaft length should be 300-400mm less than mud tank inner height. How about the impeller? This factor is decided by tank width and motor power. Generally speaking, there is a standard configuration on agitators.

When we use mud agitator holding 10 HP motor the impeller should be 850mm single impeller, or 750mm up one with 650mm down layer one. And when the mud tank inner depth is more than 2m we call the tank is deep one and we need 2 layer impellers. These above factors decide mud agitator models

Other issues on mud agitator

The other issues on mud agitator can decide specific demand. Such as the stabilizer, when the tank inner depth is more than 1.8m it will request shaft stabilizer.  Another issue is the gear box or rotary reducer. This device is an important factor of the agitator impeller speed.

Vacuum degasser introduction

Vacuum degasser is another kind of drilling mud equipment for degassing. It can be used to separate little gas invaded into the fluid.  ZCQ Vacuum degasser is one equipment  made by GN. This equipment usually set behind shale shaker but before mud cleaner. It also can be used as a big mud agitator during process.

Vacuum degasser is constructed by main vessel, gas water separator, vacuum pump, motor, and eletric control cabinet.

Main principle is take advantage of negative pressure make invaded gas out of drilling fluid. Details is as following:

When the fluids flow to  shaker, it maybe mixed with invaded gas.  However, shale shaker can only separate particles larger than 76 microns. It can’t separate gas out. Then in order to keep the property of drilling fluid we need to do degassing.

Firstly we must swith on the main motor to drive the treating vessel. When the main body get good running we need to open the vacuum pump to suction invaded gas out. Then there will be negative voltage.  As we know the drilling fluid has viscosity when the gas invaded it there will be bubbles hard to get rid of. Considering above we design main vessel has a bearing connect with a shaft attached impellers.

When vacuum degasser vessel is negative voltage the fluid will be sucked in it and the impeller will agitate and break all air bubbles. At the same time, the vacuum pump is still working. The gas comes out of bubble break will be sucked by vacuum pump. Then flow to the gas water separator.

The fluid is always with water since its igh temperature and ambient low temperature. Actually we must burn the poisonous gas to make sure the green environment. So the gas with water after go through the gas water separator will make gas more dry. Then we can flare it

Variable frequency centrifuge

More and more customer inquire the variable frequency centrifuge for the drilling mud process. As we all know, when we use the centrifuge it means the drilling cuttings should be 2~7microns. For the high speed centrifuge it will separate 2~5 microns particles out.

If the client ask for the variable frequency on decanting centrifuge it should be high speed one. Since when we change the frequency on centrifuge it will have higher speed for smaller solids separation

The work principle

Usually, when we start one centrifuge we must start the assistant motor firstly. Then the whole drum including screw impeller will move. After tens of seconds we need to start the main motor.

 Since at this occassion the main motor is much easier to be driven and protect the motors. The main motor will increase the frequency by and by until it’s up to the value you’ve regulated, such as 50Hz.

When the centrifuge is working well, we can switch on the feeding pump. According to drilling depth on well, the cuttings will be smaller and smaller. Then we need to increase frequency to make sure the cuttings separate out and keep the property of the mud.  We all know, when the well is deeper the requirements on drilling fluid will be more strict.

When we increase the frequency we just need to push one button on the frequency control cabinet. Frequency beome higher the speed will be higher also.

You see, the decanter centrifuge is after the desilter or mud cleaner. Since particle size is smaller than 15 microns. If necessary, the separation point will be  7~15 microns of the under set shale shaker.

Then we can separate smaller solids out of fluids. Rotrary speed is more higher the treating capacity will be less but the separation size will be smaller and smaller.

If we need to switch off the centrifuge, we must stop the feeding  pump firstly, main motor subsequently, assistant motor finally.

The basic information

Drilling fluid equipments usually mean the equipments for drilling mud processing on various well drilling. The equipments are used on processing drilling fluid such as purification, weighting, unweighting, mixing, configuration, etc.

Whole unit of drilling mud equipments will come to complete system for drilling fluid circulating or recycling. More and more contractors realize the necessity of processing mud during the well drilling. The equipments for drilling fluid save much cost and make more cost-effective

Including shale shaker, desander, desilter, mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge, mud agitator, jet mud mixer, centrifugal pump, etc.

For shale shaker usually there is linear motion and balanced elliptical shaker; the desander and desilter can be combined together as mud cleaner, otherwise desander or desilter can be used separately accoring to clients’ demand; decanting centrifuge can separate particles bigger than 2~7microns; jet mud mixer used in configuration or mixing mud; for the other equipments, we can call them as assistant device.

Different well drilling will request different drilling fluid and different fluid system. In oil and gas drilling industry or when the drilled well is deeper than 4km there should be degassers, such as vacuum degasser, poor boy degasser, as well as flare ignition device.

Equipments usage

As we know there are many different well drillings. Just as we told above, the equipments can be used in vertical well and horizontal well.  For vertical will hold oil and gas drilling, water well, geothermal construction, coal and mine exploration, diamond drilling; while for horiaontal well there will be HDD, civil construction, tunnelling, mine, etc.

The fluid equipments can be used on all above well drillings. They can be used as whole complete system or selected separate one subject to actual work condition
