Drillnig mud processing system nomenclature

Commonly, the drilling mud system named from treating capacity. Such as 500GPM fluids system, 200GPM mud system. However, there are also many users like calling the system by mud tank capacity. Such as 400bbl system, 500bbl mud tank system, etc.

This fluids system information

It is similar with other systems. Including GN shale shaker, mud cleaner, centrifugal pumps, mud mixing pump, mud tank as vessel of drilling fluids during the process.

The mud tank is 9000 x 2300 x 1800mm. It holding total effective capacity up to 110bbl. For dirty mud up to 45bbl capacity then for clean mud up to 65bbl capacity.

Then the shale shaker is GNZS83-3. Its treating capacity is 615GPM it’s rather effective and easy to operate. Subsequent is GNZJ83-3 mud cleaner. It combined with eight 4″ desilter cones and two 8″ desander cones. Its treating capacity is up to 615GPM also. So it gives much more harmony with whole system.

In this system, there is also centrifugal pump for mud cleaner. And the mud mixing pump, submersible slurry pump for shale shaker to pump mud from mud pit or some mud pool, etc.

How does 1110bbl system work?

Operation instruction

All of valves are closed when the system arrive at job site. The user must operate it according to following processes:

Firstly, when the system arrive at site, user should place, connect, install, configure the system subject to the actual condition. Since the system is just a part of the drilling mud purification system, its main purpose is purification, mixing the drilling fluids but not storing the drilling mud. User should connect this system with outlet of drilling rig bracket and prepare one storage tank or mud pit to contain drilling mud for supplying mud to the drilling rig.

Furthermore, inlet of GNZS83-3 Shale shaker holds 4” (PN1.0,DN100)flange/quick connection. User should connect the shale shaker to the submersible slurry pump.

Then every equipments start and stop separately they won’t affect each other. The user can use any equipment according to the drilling fluids conditions. As soon as the drilling rig begin working and drilling mud is provided appropriately the system will work well. 

Electric control instruction

The electricity control system including chief control cabinet, branch switch button, cables and lightings, etc. The incoming electricity connected with chief control cabinet firstly. Submersible slurry pump holds 22kw power, 1#, 2# cetnrifugal pump, shale shaker, mud cleaner electric power will be controlled by 1# control cabinet. While 3# centrifugal pump(mud mixing pump), mud agitator, high pressure cleaner, level gauge will be controlled by 2#control cabinet.

Abstract on used mud equipments

In mud processing system there are many equipments including shale shaker, mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge, etc. Usually, the mud system can be used more than 5 years. Of coures it should exclude the spare parts replacement.

Just in GN yard, there is a Kemtron drilling mud system for repairing. This system was produced in 2004, used mud cleaner, used shale shaker, used pump, etc. Almost all of the equipments have blemish on surface and all of the screens are rusty much. However, the used mud cleaner and shale shaker can be said 50% new.

Why do people like used shale shaker & mud cleaner?

Commonly, the mud processing equipments are manufactured strictly according to national standard or international regulation such as API, etc. This decides products high quality. The equipments usually won’t be broken easily except the spare parts and surface abrasion.

Many clients inquired used drilling mud equipments because they think used one is qualified in some degree. They only need to replace some parts and do some simple repair. Used shale shaker also requests less cost. Furthermore, they may in badly demand on mud cleaner, etc. then we wish something in stock to solve the urgency.

Generally speaking, customers ask for used equipment result from the economy investment, lead time, well drilling project situation, etc.

How to choose old mud equipment?

As we said, firstly we must know the basical condition of  mud equipments. Such as the main parts should be in good condition, the surface whether need to be renew or not, if repair it will cost how much, etc.

The used mud cleaner and shale shaker usually cost on surface, shaker screen, some bolts, etc. However, the key components, such as vibrating motor, shaker deck, main frame should be in good look and reliable enough. We should choose used one from reliable manufacturer such as Kemtron, Derrick, GN Solids Control, etc.

One more thing is, when we repair used mud cleaner and shale shaker we must need a lot of replacement, such as cones, bolts, valves, shaker screens, etc. We’d better contact original manufacturer for the complete conformity and harmony. But this will increase much time and cost.

About the paint on equipments and mud tanks

We always use Japan Kansai & COSCO coating and painting. The Zink-Rich Epoxy painting. For mud tank internal, there will be 2 layers, while for outside will be 3 Layers.

The client required the mud system powered by generator, so there should be information on the connection.

How does the generator connect – they prefer plugged since there is no electrician required on site. How does the slurry pump connect to the unit? (again preference is for plugged) and what length of cable is supplied? How are the shale shakers connected? (preference again is plugged). For Above 3 questions, they are all connected by Aviation plug as we always do. It’s easy for operation. And for cable supplied for submersible slurry pump we can provide free cable less than 30m.

Moreover, about all controls of the drilling fluids process. All of the labels are described by clear English for easy operation just as we’ve done from beginning. We’ve exported our products to over 30 countries, we must make all of equipments globalized design

A rather important issue is the capacity of the dirty and clean mud capacity in tanks. According to our design and client’s actual drilling situation the dirty Mud will be 1400Gallons, while clean mud is 2300Gallons. We recommend them to have an extra storage tank to increase total clean mud capacity.

What are the options to increase the units treatment capacity to 500GPM?

We just need to change the mud mixing pump position and mount way. We kindly suggest them take mud mixing pump on a separated skid not on the tank. Or it is mounted on the storage mud tank.

And there should be both recycling mud tank and storage mud tank. For the 2 tanks they hold same outsize dimension for convenient transportation   The storage tank only for clean mud insure the maxim capacity.

The other design is the storage mud tank hold mud agitators and mud mixing pump. All the equipments including mud tank, it should be suitable for 40’ container cater to water shipment and their local transportation regulations. So the mud tanks length will not be over8m. All of necessary pipelines and fittings will be prepared well for whole system

The system division

Knowing well on drilling fluids system division we must know clearly about the different well drilling. Such as oil & gas drilling, HDD or No dig drilling, vertical drilling for water well and thermal well, horizontal tunnelling, etc.

Each type drilling will have specific drilling rig. For example, oil and gas well drilling will also have work over rig. All of the well drilling will request drilling fluids system for mud recycling or purification.

The mud system design decided by actual drilling rig, well drilling condition, ground situation, fluids property. Usually the drilling fluids system will have 4 stage. It contains stage equipments as shale shaker, desander & desilter, or mud cleaner, decanting centrifuge.

The fluids system also needs the assistant equipments such as poor boy degasser in oil/gas well drilling, the mud agitator, mud gun for mixing, also the mud mixing pump for configuring and mixing the drilling fluids. If necessary or requested by users we also need to provide a vacuum degasser.

How does fluids system work?

The drilling fluids will come to shale shaker and processed as first stage processing. After shale shaker there will be desander & desilter, or mud cleaner as the second and third stage. Then the decanting centrifuge will follow up as fourth stage processing.

Almost every stage equipments on the mud tank there will be a compartment for fluids processing as a media. From one compartment to next compartment usually we need centrifugal pump to provide power for drilling fluids transfering, etc.

Oilfield drilling mud equipments

Usually, in oilfield drilling  mud solids control equipments are four stage. Including Shale shaker; Vacuum degasser; Desander & Desilter or Mud cleaner combined with desander, desilter and underflow shaker; Then the Decanting centrifuge.

Besides above listed ones, we also need assistant equipments to support the whole mud sytem.  Such as Mud mixing pump; Centrifugal pump divided into Horizontal and Vertical type, as well as Submersible slurry pump; Mud agitator; Poor boy degasser; Flare ignition device. Poor boy degasser and Flare ignition device are specific equipments to avoid accident.

The shale shaker is key equipments and first stage equipments on drilling mud system. Nowadays, shale shaker can be linear motion shaker, balanced elliptical shale shaker, also the dual motion shale shaker as we talked before. The mud flow into shaker by high way pipeline. The vacuum degasser follow shaker.  Then processed by shale shaker separate partical bigger than 76 microns.Vacuum degasser will get rid of small capacity invaded gas.

The second-third stage processing

Then the clean mud will fall into the shaker compartment and pumped by desander pump into desanding cones inlet.  After desanding the clean mud will flow into the desilter compartment and pumped into desilting cones inlet by desilter pump. The mud after desilter process will down to underflow shaker after that the partical size will be less than 15microns.

The fourth stage

The decanting centrifuge is the 4th solids control equipment in oil well drilling mud system. After mud cleaner separating there will be particals less than 15 microns. And usually the centrifuge can separate solids between 2-7microns. The speed is important issue decides treating capacity and separation size. Commonly, 1800RPM can separate solids larger than 5-7 microns, and 3200-3500 can separate particals 2-5 microns. As we all know, the relationship between speed and treating capacity is inverse ratio

Such as Centrifugal pump, used in pumping mud for desilter and desander. And there maybe vertical type for centrifuge. At this time it will be submersible slurry pump; the Mud mixing pump combined with centrifugal pump, Ventrie hoppers used to feeding mud material, do some circulation or configuration on drilling mud, the mud mixng pump also can be combined with shearing pump to do more strong and effective processing.

About the mud agitator, it is usually used together with mud gun as mixing device to make drilling mud more even; Finally the poor boy degasser and flare ignition device, they are specific equipments to avoid accident on oil well drilling, the poor boy degasser get rid of large quantity invaded gas in mud, after degasser processing the flare ignition device will burn it up to make sure satety operation

Drilling mud container in Solids Control System

Drilling mud containers are the base of solids control equipments. It is usaully called mud tanks. The mud containers for solids control system is divided into Square tank and Cone-shaped tank according to the shape of tank bottom. The body of the tank is made of welding the steel plate and section, using the flat cone-shape structure or the corrugated structure. The drilling mud container surface and the passage are made of the slipping resistant steel plate and linearity netted steel plate. The containers are made of the side steel pipe, all of the structure can be folded without barrier and pegged reliably.

The surface of tank is equipped with water pipeline for cleaning the surface and equipment on the drilling mud container, it uses soaked zinc processing for the netted steel plate. The ladder is made of the channel steel to take responsibility the body, the foot board is made of the linearity netted steel plate. The two-sided guard rail are installed the safe suspension hook. The drilling mud container is designed the standard shanty to prevent the sand and the rain. The pipeline is installed in the tank to preserve the warm air heat.
