There are several different types of drilling muds used for different drilling conditions, mainly divided into 3 types, the water based mud, oil based mud and SBM. The mostly used ones are WBM and OBM.

For deep well drillings, the OBM is most common solution. Considering it’s components, the oil based mud is more expensive than water based mud, that’s why as much as mud should be recovered from the waste. Meanwhile, the OBM is more harmful to the environment if the cuttings from drillings are not well treated before discharge. As leading manufacturer and solution provider, GN Solids Control has designed and supplied to many different end users with its professional solution for drilling cuttings treatment. For oil base mud cuttings, recently, another new set of such system was successfully use in CNPC, one of the 3 largest oil companies in China, both their engineers and operators are giving good comments.

This system includes:

1. GNCD930 vertical cuttings dryer, which is specially designed for treating the oil based cuttings, it is like a washing machine. By using screen baskets of different mesh sizes per cuttings condition, and after the vertical cuttings dryer, the oil on cutting could be reduced to below 0.5%.

2. The second treating machine is a high speed decanter centrifuge. In this project, the end user chose GNLW363CG-VFD, a 14 inch diameter bowl decanter centrifuge, with variable speed up to 3200RPM. It is used for further treatment of drilling fluid discharged from the vertical cuttings dryer.

3. Transferring equipment. For transferring the drilling cuttings, GN has different suggestions based on customers’ jobsite layout and cuttings location. Normally, if the cuttings treatment system is alongside the rig and used for treating the cuttings direct from solids control system, screw conveyor is good choice to collect cuttings from shaker and transfer to hopper of vertical cuttings dryer. If the wed cuttings are from a pit or pond, we recommend GNSP vacuum pump.

In offshore projects, cause of the distance from the land, all material must be used to the most, the most liquid should be reused and least cuttings to be transported back to land. The shaker is used for separating out the most of solids, for handling the heaviest burden, the high performance and strong structure of shaker is quite important. Following features of GNZS series shakers ensures the shaker’s quality and performance:

1. A high G force up to 8.5G powered by Oli Vibrator for a good separation work.

2. Stainless steel shaker deck is stronger for handling the high G force.

3. Patent design of rubber sealing, effectively avoided the leaking of mud.

Just last week, GN Solids Control has finished a compact mud recycling unit, with full steps for separation for one of the largest oil giants in China. This system is to be transported to the jobsite by end of this year.

This system has 4 steps of separation, including:

1. GNZS703F. Shale shakers are always the first step for separation, because of GN shakers’ high G force and accurate API complied shaker screens, this shale shaker can efficiently separate out all particles larger than 100 microns, there in hence to help with prolonging the service life of the centrifugal pump after the shaker.

2. GNZJ703F-1S8N Mud Cleaner. Mud cleaner is a combined machine of desander and desilter, at a smaller foot print. It uses interchangeable shaker screens as GNZS703F, 2 centrifugal pumps are used to feed the desander and desilter respectively.

3. GNSP series Centrifugal pumps are also GN’s own products. For material choosing, GN used the high quality anti-weary material as pump body material by hard ductile iron alloy, and the main pump body is thicker than other manufacturers’. All GNSB series centrifugal pumps are using stainless steel mechanical seals.

4. Tank and skid for above mentioned equipment. Above mentioned equipment are located as 2 blocks. One block is a skid with lifting and anchoring corners just as a 20ft container, and the shale shaker and mud cleaner are located in the skid during transportation and operation. That design facilitates the operator for transportation or lifting the whole skid onto a tank, no to adjust each equipment or pipeline’s position.

5. A tank with compartments are designed to storage the mud from the shaker and from the desander/desilter. On below the tank, there are some slots for installing the centrifugal pumps. The whole outsize of the tank is also same as a 20ft container with container corners for lifting.

It is a common knowledge that in the solids control system for a drilling rig, no matter for the land rigs or for the offshores, the shale shaker plays the most important role for separating out the solids waste from the mud recycling unit, and it is also the shale shaker which waste the most of the liquid on the cuttings discharged from the shaker. That’s why, in many countries, there is a must to equip another drilling cuttings treatment system alongside the rig.
A drilling cuttings waste management system is used for further separation of the drilling waste discharged from the shale shaker and mud cleaner, most of which are from the shakers. For one thing, the drilling cuttings waste management system helps to dry the cuttings for later transportation, on the other hand, it increased the drilling liquid amount to be recycled. Both are saving money. In case of OBM mud, the operators always need a vertical cuttings dryer and a high speed decanter centrifuge, while for WBM mud, operators always use a high G drying shaker and a decanter centrifuge.
In some cases, the ViST Shaker screen device could replace the drilling cuttings waste management system, or at least to some degree, reduced the work for the cuttings separation works. Generally speaking, the ViST shaker screen device has following advantages:

Recently, GN just finished another set of solids control system to Australia, which is going to be used for oil and gas industry and now the system is at sea for sailing to Australia. Seldom solids control manufacturers could reach such a high standard of Australia, which are even higher than the USA and Europe. But this system is not the first one. In recent years, GN has provided to Australia 3 sets of oil and gas solids control systems, and more than 30 sets of mud systems for HDD projects.
Besides the normal standards for the oil and gas industries, the Australian market has its specially high standards:

1. For electrical components, including the motors, cables, glands and control panels, all have to meet both IECEX standards and Australia standards.

2. Walkways and guardrails must reach very specific standards, like the max and min distance of gaps. Lifting pads and lifting eyes all have to meet safety standards, and marked with SWL.

3. Walkways and stairs are made of high duty fiber glass, instead of gratings or checkered plates.

4. Higher standards for welding and painting.

Australian companies are quite strict when choosing the supplier and inspecting the equipment. During fabrication and before delivery, there are top management and third party engineers coming to GN Solids Control for checking their orders. In practice of solids control industry, mostly used shaker types are single deck shakers. But as the development of the allocations, there are fewer desander and desilters to be used, while more and more shakers are being chosen as replacement of desander and desilters by using finer screen meshes. A double deck shaker or a set of double deck shakers could provide both a large treating capacity and a good separating result.

GNZS706F series double deck shakers are widely used in such conditions. It has 2 layers of shaker deck, the upper deck is kind of scalping deck, with 2 pcs of shaker screens, each with dimension of 750mm by 900mm, which is also the shaker screen size of a mini shaker GN Solids Control always makes. The lower deck is same as the most popular model GNZS703 series shakers, using screens with size 700mm by 1250mm, providing a total screen area as 1.35m2 of upper deck while 2.63m2 of lower deck. The upper deck uses coarse screens as the first step of separation, while the second deck uses finer screens to separate out the smaller cuttings. GN could locate them as double-shaker set or tri-shaker set sharing one mud distributor to serve for different treating capacities. Both smaller and bigger screens are made by GN Solids Control, with composite material frame for a larger conductance, longer service life and a safer usage.
By using 2 sets of high G force vibrating motors each of 1.94kw, the double deck shaker has a vibration G force up to 8.0G, and the stainless steel made shaker deck design well endured the high vibration with strong structure.
Besides double deck shaker GNZS706, GN Solids Control has a complete series of shale shakers, including the 2, 3 or 4 screens shakers like GNZS752, GNZS703 and GNZS594. For the latter 2 models, GN also has high-G drying shaker available with hopper feeding and larger G force. Except for the oil and gas solids control, GN shakers are also widely used for HDD, TBM, pipe jacking and other drilling works.
