1. 2. GN shear pump. Shear pump is not so commonly used as centrifugal pump. They are only used for shearing some special chemicals which are needed for large horsepower oil and gas drilling rigs.
3. Submersible Slurry pump. Submersible slurry pump’s applications in GN solids’ mud system and mud units are mainly those two: one is for centrifuge feeding in solids control systems like for the barite recovery and extra fine particle separation, or for the HDD mud recycling units, it is the second to none choice for transfer slurry from the mud pit to the mud system.
4. Vacuum pump. GN series vacuum pumps are the newest member among GN pumps. But it gained highest attention ever since its birth. Comparing with other pumps, the most obvious difference is that it has no motor. It is fully air driven and has less limitation for the solids size. In practice, it could handle material with particle size only a bit smaller than it’s pipeline diameter.

Decanter centrifuge is one of the most important equipment in a complete solids control system and a waste management system not only for the drilling cuttings waste management but also the further treatment for the drilling mud. In some projects, the shale shakers with different API number shaker screens and the decanter centrifuges with different rotating speed, they can totally replace the desander and desilter cones. That’s why a professional decanter centrifuge and a efficient centrifuge feeding pump are very important to the drilling mud system.

According to the control panel, the decanter centrifuge could be divided into 2 kinds, the fixed speed one and the VFD controlled one. And the centrifuge feeding pumps are of different types also, some are suitable for both the fixed speed and VFD controlled panel.

  1. the centrifugal pumps are most widely used in oil and gas solids control systems, and in theory, it could be the centrifuge feeding pump also, just like it roles for feeding the desander cones and desilter cones and also like the mixing pump. But in fact, it is not so common as centrifuge feeding pump.
  2. the submersible slurry pump. In the solids control system, submersible slurry pump is the most common choice for feeding the centrifuge. Because it is vertically installed, it occupies small foot print on the limited tank surface. And comparing with mono pumps, the submersible slurry pump is less expensive and easy to maintain.
  3. screw pump, which is also called the mono pump is the most popular pump used for feeding the centrifuge especially in the waste management systems. GN recommend this screw pump for feeding the decanter centrifuge, and GNLW363CG-VFD decanter centrifuge, the 3 VFD controls include the VFD control for the screw pump.

Among all the decanter centrifuges used for solids control and waste management systems for oil and gas drilling, they could be divided into big bowl centrifuges, medium sized decanter centrifuges and baby centrifuges. Per bowl rotating speeds, they could be divided as middle speed decanter centrifuges and high speed decanter centrifuges. Per their electric control system they are fixed speed and variable speed available.

Like GNLW363C series decanter centrifuges, GN has 4 models while 5 options available, they are highest configuration ones, for waste management use mostly, and economic standard ones. And for each configuration, end users could choose fixed speed or VFD control panel. For the economic standard option, GN has positive pressurized VFD control panel with PLC and normal VFD control panel for option.

What feeding pumps are used respectively or the decanter centrifuges per their control panels’ differences?

  1. For fixed speed control panel decanter centrifuges, you could use both the submersible slurry pump and the screw pump or called mono pump. In case of fixed speed decanter centrifuge, normally no need to change the speed and feeding capacity which is already set with a formula of centrifuge feeding speed and gearbox ratio and motor rotating speed, and etc. In order to change the feeding capacity when using the submersible slurry pump, extra liquid fed to the centrifuge could flow back via the overflow pipeline of the centrifuge. In case of the screw pump, the end user could install a mechanical devise on the screw pump as a manual valve. Such is shaped as a wheel and could be switched left or right in order to get a suitable feeding capacity.
  2. For the VFD controlled decanter centrifuges, the common and practical solution is always the mono pump or screw pump. The screw pump’s motor is connected with the control panel and on the other side of the motor is the gearbox connected with the pump rotating part. By changing the HZ via control panel, the directly connected screw pump would change the feeding speed and accordingly the feeding capacity.
