In April,there are three sets of drilling waste management system have been finished for Sinopec in Shandong to dry the drilling waste discharged from the drilling rig site, and now they are ready for delivery to fulfill their this responsibility in the working site. Earlier this month, another three sets of high G shale shaker and vertical cutting dryer were transported to Sichuan. Also, we are now negotiating with a Georgia customer on a vertical cutting dryer, who is very satisfied with GN vertical cutting dryer,but just considering the transport charges and time. Last year, the international company Shell was sued in Nigeria because of some environmental issues of spilling crude oil by its facilities in Nigeria. Shell paid a great amount for this issue and had to adjust its strategy. It is not the only case about the environment problem affecting the behavior and standards of the oil and gas companies.

How to solve the pollution problem from drilling?

Just in last year, many countries has established laws and restrictions for preventing the oil and gas industry from polluting the environment. Reasons are quite clear:

Leakage or improper of treatment of crude oil or the drilling discharges, could incur:

  1. pollution of land, air, and water resources,
  2. it could barren the farm land for ever.
  3. it kills the fishes and crabs in nearby water.

In a word, the pollution could affect the biology surrounding and therefore greatly changes the life style and the economic basis of the residents’ health and even lives. That’s why although the oil brings to the country wealth, the oil companies are always not welcomed by the local residents.

For any drilling work in China or in many other countries especially in more advanced companies, there are strict laws for drilling waste treatment after the drilling work. The treatment or management of drilling cuttings covers two topics, one is the recycling of useful materials, the drilling mud, to be reused into next project. And the solids phase, the cuttings should be separated out to the most and to be discharged safely.

GN Solids Control

The first system used with the drilling rig is solids control system, it contains main equipments including shale shaker, desander cones, desilter cones, mud cleaner and solids control centrifuge. It is called 4 levels of separation. After those above mentioned equipment, the drilling mud is clean enough to return back to the mud system and to be used into drilling again. It is the first closed loop.

But since the liquid phase as cleaned drilling mud returns to system, the cuttings should be discharged after some treatment, because in most countries according to the law, drilling cuttings are forbidden to be discharged directly because of damage to environment.

Besides solids control system, GN also provide the complete system until both the cuttings and drilling liquid are separated and transported to the place they should be. The drilling cuttings are firstly treated by a waste management system, containing equipments like high-G drying shaker GNZS594HGE-LD or vertical cuttings dryer GNCD930D as the 1st step of separation, and second step is decanter centrifuge GNLW363CG-VFD.

Later, secondly, the discharges are divided into 2 parts, liquid, enter back into the drilling system’s clean mud, and the solids, to be treated to the next system, GN Solidification unit, to stabilize the drilling cuttings and to discharge them safely. End of the solids phase.

And the liquid part, after being used as clean mud for several times, there may be small and extra fine particles in it. Then, using GNDU dewatering unit, the liquid part could be further treated and cleaned.

In many countries in the world, even in the northern global, it is early spring now. But in some places in the world, like Russia, it is still extremely cold winter. In the snowy world, GN’s equipments and systems easily caught the eyes.

This is the picture of working jobsite of GN Solids Control’s drilling cuttings management system operating in a world famous service company’s site. This company ordered 4 sets of same systems from GN in autumn of year 2014 and those systems were delivered in November from GN factory near Beijing, China. Now all of the 4 sets systems arrived to jobsite and under commissioning by GN engineers.

For such systems, GN has standard design, and similar systems have been used in many countries and places in the world, including the high temperature places, like Kuwait, Iraq and etc where the temperature in summer could reach 60 degrees centigrade, and frozen places like Russia where the temperature in winter could reach minus 40 degrees centigrade, GN’s equipments conquered all challenges and provided good performance.

In this system, there are 2 main equipments, Vertical cuttings dryer and High speed decanter centrifuge. Among all solids control and waste management equipments, these 2 equipments mostly show the producing capacity of the manufacturer.

 

 

Because:

  1. Vertical cuttings dryer is the world advanced equipment. Years before, only several US and European companies designed the cuttings dryer, and some of them are not so efficient. Cuttings Re-Injection

Cuttings Re-Injection (CRI) is an in situ method for the disposal of drill cuttings and other drilling wastes into a sub-surface stratum. Drill cuttings are slurrifi ed with water (fresh or sea water) and ground down to a pre-determined particle size. The particle size is achieved by passing through a shaker screen. Slurry of the correct particle size and physical properties is injected via a pump, which is typically of a triplex design, into the well head at a given pressure and down into the predetermined sub-surface injection zone. Oversize particles from the shaker are re-circulated for further grinding.

Drill Cuttings Thermal Treatment

This thermal process is designed to treat NADF Drill Cuttings (base oil can be diesel, low toxicity, or synthetic), which reduces the oil on the solids exit the process to < 1% dry weight, and recovers the valuable base oil in a state suitable for reuse. This process has been successfully operated and therefore licensed in the UK and Holland. To date the operating plants have processed well in excess of 100,000 MT of drill cuttings after shale shaker. The process is not designed for processing water based waste or wastes with a very high liquid content. The process is not suitable for processing ester based drill cuttings, as the ester breaks down at the process temperatures.

Chemically Enhanced Centrifugation For Cuttings

Cuttings Chemically Enhanced Centrifugation, CEC, otherwise known as fl occulation, is a method to enhance the remove of fi ne solids in WBM through a centrifuge. Small quantities of additives are mixed with the used WBM, which coagulate and fl occulate fi ne colloidal solids into a larger clumps, which are then easily removed using a centrifuge. CEC reduces the volume of waste mud generated as it allows the clarifi ed fl uid to be reused to build new drilling fl uids. Overall the total volume of waste, the size of the pits, and the quantity of water required per well are all reduced.

Drill Cuttings Soidification and Stabilisation

Oily drill cuttings from the shale shakers may not be suitable for direct disposal to land without further treatment. Regulations in some countries require the “waste” to meet certain criteria such as the leachability of specifi ed contaminants. Solidifi cation and stabilisation of the drilling waste is a method whereby the raw cuttings from the shaker / centrifuge are mixed with additives in order that the treated wastes will meet the criteria for land disposal. Solidifi cation typically refers to encapsulating the waste such that the leachability of contaminants is reduced by minimising the surface area of the waste exposed to leaching, or by totally encapsulating the waste with an impervious layer.
