3 Pacakge Drilling Rig Solids Control Equipment for South America Customer

Solids Control system is an essential part of a drilling rig system, which is used for remove the drilling cuttings from the expensive drilling mud. In this way, the clean mud can be returned to the drilling procedure and to be reused. On the other hand, it is also protecting the environment by discharge less waste.
In a complete drilling solids control system, there should be shale shakers, mud cleaner, decanter centrifuge of middle speed, decanter centrifuge of high speed and the feeding pumps for the mud cleaner and centrifuges.

2022.12.21 Decanter Centrifuge

1. shale shakers with model GNZS594J for 3 packages, totally 12 sets.
2. Mud cleaner, GNZJ594J-3S16N, each rig system need 1 set of mud cleaner to play the roles for desander and desilter cones.
3. Centrifugal pumps for desander and desilter cones, they are same as mission magnum centrifugal pumps.
4. Middle speed decanter centrifuge for each package, with model GNLW363D-GP.
5. High speed decanter centrifuge for each package, with model GNLW363D-VFD.
6. Screw pumps for each centrifuge as feeding pump.

Functions of each equipment: in fact, the solids control system are used for removing the drilling cuttings from the mud in a physical way, which means, each step of separation is based on the drilling cuttings’ particle sizes. The shale shakers are used to remove the most particles larger than 100 microns. Desander and desilter are working with centrifugal force generated by the cyclones’ structure, and their cuttings points are respectively 40 and 20 microns. The middle speed centrifuge are used for removal of particles from 5 to 7 microns, which here means barite recovery. And the high speed centrifuges are used for removing particles from 2 to 5 microns, extra fine ones.

Desander Desilter and Degasser for China Drilling Company

Drilling companies or drilling contractors are always rig owners who win projects all over the world drilling for oil exploration companies. Along with each rig, there is a solids control system, and a solids control system is comparably independent system among the 8 systems for a rig.

2022.12.13 Vacuum Degasser

In a complete solids control system, there are following equipment involved:

Shale shakers, desanders, desilters, degasser, decanter centrifuges and pumps. In a recent project, a China drilling company has just purchased from GN Solids Control following equipment for a solids control system:

1. Desander GNZJ752J-1S. The desander cones are located after the shale shaker, which is used to remove particles above 40 microns. For this desander, there is a drying shaker with 2 pieces of shaker screens and a screen size of 1.35 square meter. Normally for weighted mud there should be a desander or desilter with underflow shaker. Here it is a one desander model with a 10 inch diameter desander cone.

2. Desilter GNZJ752J-8N. This desilte is located after the desander. It is called desilter cause it is used to remove particles larger than 20 microns which are mostly sized as silt. Same as the desander, it has an underflow shaker, too. Both the desander and desilter are fed by centrifugal pumps.

3. Vacuum degasser GNZCQ270B. Vacuum degassers are located after the shale shaker while before the cyclones. GN Vacuum degasser has no need of a large power. Instead, it can be regarded as a large agitator. GN Solids Control has 2 models of vacuum degasser available and the GNZCQ270 is the smaller one. Besides the vacuum degasser, GN Solids Control also has centrifugal degasser available.

Two Sets HDD Mud Cleaning System for SINOPEC

HDD is a quite common way for pipeline works in cities or for pipelines across the rivers or so. This word is short for horizontal directional drilling. Just as other drilling, the drilling mud is to be used for HDD and the drilling mud should be well treated and prepared for reuse. A complete mud cleaning system for HDD always includes following steps for separation:

1. Shale shaker. In many mud cleaning systems or so called solids control systems, the shale shaker is always the first step for separation. It is used to remove most of particles and also the largest particles. In those 2 systems GN recently made for SINOPEC, the shale shakers are GNZS703F. This shaker model is quite popular in HDD projects and also used for oil and gas solids control systems. It has a screen area of 2.63 square meters provided by 3 pieces of shaker screens each sized 1250*700mm.
2. Mud cleaner. In fact, in an HDD mud cleaning system, there are always desander cones and desilter cones. Desander cones are of 10 inch diameter, which is used for removal of particles larger than 40 microns. And the desilter cones are of 4 inch diameter for removal of particles larger than 20 microns. A mud cleaner is a combination of desander cones and desilter cones, with a shared underflow shaker for drying.
3. A mud mixing hopper is a must for a HDD mud cleaning system, which is used for adding the loss components into the recycled drilling mud in order to prepare the drilling mud for the future drilling. A mud mixing hopper has a hopper and a centrifugal pump, the hopper can be located together with pump by the mud tank, or on tank top with the centrifugal pump on tank bottom.
4. A decanter centrifuge, which is not a must but quite efficient in high configuration systems. A middle speed centrifuge like GNLW452D is used to remove particles from 5 to 7 microns. And a high speed centrifuge is used to remove particles from 2 to 5 microns.

1500GPM Drilling Mud Cleaner for Drilling Company in China

In a drilling rig solids control system, there are at least 3 steps for separation, the shale shaker, the desander cones and desilter cones. And there is a machine as a combination of desander and desilter, which is called a mud cleaner. Comparing with such designs as a single desander plus a single desilter, the mud cleaner occupies a much smaller footprint. Meanwhile, by sharing one drying shaker, the mud cleaner is less power consumable.

Main Specifications of GNZJ594F-3S16N:

1. GNZJ594F: it is a shaker model among GN shale shakers, it is equipped by 2 vibrating motors each of 1.72kw power. The shaker is equipped by 4 pieces of shaker screens, with a total screen area of 2.73 square meters. The shaker deck is quite strong and uses good sealing in order to prevent leakage. The shaker deck angle can be adjusted during operating for achieving a good performance.

2. Shaker screens. The shaker screens on the shale shakers are made by GN Solids Control, too. GN shale shakers are fully in compliance with API RP 13C, with same screen dimension, the non-blanked area and conductance are both comparably larger.

3. Desander and desilters. GN chooses polyurethane desander and desilter cyclones for longer service life. Desander cyclones are of 10 inch diameter for the 40 microns cutting point, and desilter cyclones are of 4 inch diameter for 20 micron cutting point.

Complete System for Both Mud Recovery and Slurry Treatment

1. Mud tanks: This systme is equipped by several mud tank skids with effective tank volume≥25m³. They are suitable for transportatiaon inside containers and being lifted at jobsite.

2. Shale shakers. A single shale shaker’s designed capacity is larger than 120m³/h, with vibrating motors with total power 3.44KW. Each system has 2 or 3 shale shakers depended by the requested capacity. The shakers are well sealed and easy for changing screens and spare parts. During transportation, the shakers are to be removed from tank and to be shipped inside container.

3. Mud cleaner: Mud cleaner is a combination of both desander and desilter. The capacity of desander and desilter are in complianc with the total system’s request and achieved by certain quantity of cyclones. Both desander and desilter share the same drying screen on below, with screen area of 2.63 square meters. Total power 3.44kw.
4. Decanter centrifuge: there is a big bowl decanter centrifuge located after the desilter cones. The cutting point of decanter centrifuge is 2 to 5 microns, which is suitable for remove the fine particles from the drilling mud. In this system, there are big bowl centrifuges adopted, with 18 or 22 inch bowl diameter.

5. Chemical dosing system: in case there are extra fine particles in the drilling mud, we have to invite a chemical dosing system with polymer injected into the drilling fluids in order to flocculate the extra particles to be within the centrifuge’s treating range. The chemical dosing system is designed inside a 20 ft container for easy transportation and layout.

6. Jet mud mixing unit: a jet mud mixing unit is used in this system for prepare new mud by adding drilling chemicals into the clarified driling mud.

Solids Control systems and equipment are quite important for a successful drilling project. An efficient solids control system can helps to remove solids particles out of the drilling mud. In this way, the expensive drilling mud could be reused in future drilling. What is included in a complete solids control system?

2021.11.18 Shale Shaker

A complete solids control system, especially for a large power horse drilling rig, should have following equipment divided per tanks:

1. The trip tank. Per certain rig size, there should be a certain amount of drilling mud to be prepared, but during drilling, there is always some mud loss because of drilling or because of mud separation. So there should be a trip tank holding well prepared mud for compensate the mud loss. For the trip tank, there is always a mud agitator and a centrifugal pump as trip pump.

2. Settle tank or also called the shaker tank. Shale shakers are the first step separation of the solids control system, they are used to remove the most solids from the drilling mud with suitable vibrating G force and screen mesh. On a long shaker tank, after the shale shakers, there should be a degasser to remove the bubbles generated during drilling to ensure the safety and to protect the pumps in following steps. If there is a mud cleaner in this system, it should be on this tank, too. A mud cleaner is a combination of desanding cones and desilter cones fed by centrifugal pumps.

3. Active tank. It is a tank for decanter centrifuge. The decanter centrifuge is located after the mud cleaner, to do the barite recovery or fine particle separation. It is always fed by a submersible slurry pump or a screw pump

4. Suction tank for mixing and reserve tank for storage.

Construction Slurry Dewatering System Working for North America Waste Management Company

1. Coarse shaker: coarse shale shakers are equipped by rubber screens or gap screens with large openings to remove the large objects. If those large things falls into the tank, it will increase the burden for the shale shaker and also damage the pump.

2. GNZS706F Double deck shale shaker: Shale shakers are efficient equipment to take the heaviest burden for removing particles. By using suitable screen meshes, the shale shaker can remove all particles above 100 microns. A double deck shaker is even more efficient than single deck ones, because on upper deck they adopt one API number for screens to have larger holes, and on lower deck they adopt another API number with smaller holes. In this way, with one set of vibrating motors, there could be 2 stages for separation.

3. GNZS703F-16N Desilter cyclones. Desilter cyclones are also called desilter cones, they are cyclones with 4 inch diameter, and they are used to remove particles below 20 microns by centrifugal force. The cones are fed by a centrifugal pump and the material will be splashed onto inner surface of cyclones. Solids particles will fall down from cyclone bottom and liquid goes up out of cyclone from the top.

4. GNLW553C-VFD Decanter centrifuge. Decanter centrifuge is always located after the cyclones or at least shale shakers with fine screens. Decanter centrifuges can treat the material quite thoroughly by centrifugal force generated from high speed rotation. It is a commonly used equipment for fine particles from 2 to 5 microns. The limit is the inlet solids content. If there are too large particles, it may block or even broke the centrifuge. That’s why before the centrifuge there must be some other equipment.

5. GNDW Chemical dosing system. When there are even finer particles in the liquid, we shall invite in the chemical dosing system. It can flocculate the fine particles into bigger ones by adding chemicals like polymer or something else.
